JEC helps school kids learn to conserve

Jackson Energy is helping kids—and their parents—learn about ways they can increase efficiency, conserve energy and save on their power bills.

Jackson Energy is providing area elementary schools with Super Energy Saver kits to use in classroom curriculums. The kits include activity sheets, light switch plates featuring reminders to turn off lights when not in use and take-home checklists designed to walk kids and parents through the home and identify energy-saving practices.

Karen Combs, Director of Public Relations said she hopes students will take the checklists home and lead their parents on an energy efficiency tour of their residence, identifying opportunities to save.

“This is a quick, fun way to get kids actively involved in making their homes more energy efficient,” said Combs, "Plus, parents will find that this information really can make a difference in their energy use and power bills.”

The kits are designed for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. They feature CFL Charlie, Touchstone Energy’s mascot for promoting energy efficiency among school children.

“It’s fitting that CFL Charlie is the mascot for this initiative because Kentucky’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives have handed out more than 440,000 compact fluorescent lightbulbs to our members since 2003,” said Combs. "This is just another example of how Jackson Energy is committed to helping our members use energy as wisely as possible.”

Jackson Energy also partners with other Touchstone Energy Cooperatives to offer the Touchstone Kids Zone web site, which is a cool, fun way to learn about electricity, energy efficiency and electrical safety with games, videos and other fun stuff.
