News7/8/2008 Round-Up Board funds commuity grantsJakson Energy's Operation Round-Up Board awarded grants totaling $1,500 at the July meeting, which also saw the election of new officers and the departure of two original board members. Operation Round-Up Board members Robert Lisle and Patricia Abner receive certificates from Vice President of Customer Service Rodney Chrisman to recognize their service to the board. The board awarded grants to the following organizations: - $250 to the Laurel County Historical Society, - $250 to Owsley County Partnership Housing, - and$1,000 to the Laurel County Christian Shelter for the Homeless. Before the meeting began, Chairman Robert "Beetle" Lisle and Secretary Patricia Abner were presented cerificates in recognition of their service to the board. Lisle, from Estill County, and Lee County's Abner were two of the founding board members when Operation Round-Up began in 2003. Their terms expired at the July meeting and new officers were elected for the 2008-2009 term. Mike Montgomery of Jackson County was elected chairman. Owsley County's Jerry McIntosh was elected vice chairman and Gayle Scoggin of Rockcastle County was selected as secretary. In other action, the board tabled the following grant request until the next meeting in October - Boy Scouts Eagle Scout Cemetery Project in Clay County. The board also denied the following grant requests - Owsley County Outreach, Estill County Kiwanis Park, Pond Creek Fire Department, Ladies Auxiliary of Owsley County, Clay County Community Theater and the Lee County Diabetes and Wellness Coalition. Board members present at the meting were Chairman Robert Lisle, Vice Chairman Mike Montgomery, Secretary Patricia Abner, Jerry McIntosh, John Scoville and Gayle Scoggin. Operation Round-Up allows a member to voluntarily round up their monthly electric bill to an even dollar amount, and the extra money is placed in a trust account used to fund community projects. Studies have shown that the average amount contributed to Operation Round-Up is less than 50 cents a month.
